A drive through Bavaria wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Neuschwanstein Schloss (castle). There is quite the story behind this place. King Ludwig II, also known as "Mad Ludwig" built this castle as a retreat. He died shortly after it was completed and seven weeks after his death it was opened to the public in 1886. It's quite the tourist magnet! The kids really enjoyed the tour and we had to take a horse drawn wagon up to the top. The views were breathtaking and it was a gorgeous sunny day.
We also stopped at Linderhof Palace. It was Ludwig's "royal villa". He modeled it after Versailles. The rooms were decorated beyond ornate. You'd have to see it to believe it! It was a fun tour and the kids really enjoyed being inside a palace.
