The weekend of October 2-4 I was able to sneak away for a girls' weekend to Scotland. I went with my ever faithful travel companions, Suzie and Sandra. We were a bit sad to be leaving the beautiful Swiss weather we have been enjoying to head for the cold, rainy, wind of Great Britain. However, the Scottish hospitality made up for the lack of sunshine (and the good beer).
The first thing that I enjoyed about Edinburgh was the fact that I could read everything!!!! And understand the people...most of the time! We took a double decker bus to our hotel in the GrassMarket, dropped off our bags, and headed to a pub for fish and chips. Yummy! The first night was for exploring the area and doing some shopping. We did lots of shopping! The evenings meal consisted of more fish 'n chips, a hamburger (that was cooked all the way through), and Haggis!
Saturday morning we found a nice cafe and fueled up on scones and coffee. Little did we know we wouldn't eat again until almost 3:30 in the afternoon! We made our way down the Royal Mile, stopping at St. Giles, until we arrived at Holyrood Palace. This is the official residence of Her Majesty the Queen while she visits Scotland. The tour was enjoyable and we saw the rooms of Mary Queen of Scots. This was the first "working" palace any of us had been in and it was fun to imagine Charles and the "boys" strolling through the same rooms. We continued back towards our hotel, dropped off our stuff, and headed back out to find the school that inspired J.K. Rowling to write the Harry Potter books. Then it was off to our next destination...to find the apartment where Dan used to live when he studied in Edinburgh. After one wrong turn and a phone call to Dan we found Ye Olde Golf Tavern. No Dan didn't live in a bar (well.....), but the bar was next door to the apartment. We had an amazing lunch there and then headed back to our hotel. Only to go out one last time.
It was an extremely quick weekend, but filled with lots of fun!
