Swiss Day

Today we were out of the house by 8:40 am. The car was packed with sleds, ice skates, snow pants, and excited children! The morning was dreary in Morges, but the second we got up high enough past the cloud cover the sky was blue and the sun was shining. We headed towards the Jura Mountain Range. This gives you the most spectacular view of the French Alps. The clouds completely cover Lac Leman, so the lake literally looks like a sea of clouds. The mountains were breathtaking today, there is no other way to decribe it.

We headed towards Lac de Joux. We've driven around this lake before, but we've been told by several people that the lake freezes over and people skate across the lake. This isn't a little lake mind you. It's long and narrow. Before we reached the lake we stopped at a sledding hill. Dan and I are always paranoid that we are somehow breaking some rules. We were the only people at the hill for about a half hour, but then other families started arriving and we finally left when it was getting a bit crowded. Even Ben enjoyed sledding! My friend Muriel loaned us their wooden sled with a seat. It even had an attached sleeping bag! Don't worry, we didn't let Ben go down the hill alone...Dan was with him!

After sledding we headed for lunch. Finding a spot to eat is never easy in little towns with minimal selection. We settled for a pizzeria that had great pizza, but we all left feeling like we'd smoked a pack of cigarettes. (the no smoking law has finally passed, but I don't think it's in affect yet and I don't see small towns really obeying it). We also dined next to two poodles. We don't go out to eat very often in Switzerland.....

We then headed to Lac de Joux. I hope you can get some intdication of the beauty of the surroundings from our pictures. It was just awesome! Zoe is quite the skater and Sam tries his best. Dan and the kids actually skated across the width of the lake! At one point their was a hot air balloon sailing over the lake and we also witnessed two swans flying over the lake.

As if that wasn't enough we got home and immediately left to have dinner with friends. The guys (Dan, Matt, Didi, and Mark) ate at Matt and Sandra's and the girls (Sandra, Suzie, Christina, and I) with the kids ate at Suzie and Didi's. The kids played, but they were all pretty exhausted! I left by 9:00 I think. It was fun to hang out though. We are so fortunate to have great friends here!
