Athens

We had a full day in Athens before our flight took off mid-afternoon. Luckily we were able to put our luggage in a locker at the metro station! The day would have been miserable had we been forced to drag around our bags all day! Naturally the only thing on our agenda was hitting Acropolis. You can't really be in Athens and NOT see it! At 8:00 am the streets were dead and it was only a short walk to one of the entrances.

The kids didn't seem that thrilled to be looking at more "old stuff", but once we actually got up to the Parthenon they were impressed. (except for Ben....who cried most of the morning) This is one of those ancient sites that you really can't describe to someone, you simply have to see it for yourself. The site is massive, the Parthenon itself must have been a most incredible structure in it's glory, because it still is today! There is a great a scaffolding around the Parthenon and Zoe pointed out that maybe when her and Sam come back with their families someday they will be done fixing the building! I'm glad she plans to coninue to travel!!!!

After our visit we walked over to the Acropolis Museum. This museum has only been open for a month and is beautiful! Many of the floors are glass and you look down into ruins. Very cool! It houses mostly sculptures and parts of sculptures that have been excavated from the area. Hopefully most of the artifacts that are in London will be returned to Greece now that they have a beautiful/safe place to display them.
