Chamonix, France

A spectacular day in France! Last Saturday we drove to Chamonix, France. It's about an hour and half drive and the weather was perfect. We all wanted to see the Mt. Blanc up close one more time. When we arrived we bought tickets for the red mountain train to take us to Mer de Glace. It is the second largest glacier in the Alps. (14 km long, 1800 m wide, and up to 400 m deep). There are also caves dug into the glacier that we were able to go into. It was a fascinating trip. The kids loved the train and the 150 steps down to the glacier. What shocked Dan and I were the plaques stating how high the glacier was in 1980, 1990, 2000....seriously our kids won't be able to take their kids to see this glacier. It's sad. We used it as a teaching opportunity to talk about the importance of protecting the environment.

Inside the caves the kids were so excited to touch the walls. Sam said, "It's like a HUGE icecube!" They also got their picture take with a St. Bernard named Alaska.

After taking the train down we walked through the town of Chamonix. The highlight there was going to a French bakery and buying a bread and pastries. Both boys ended up dropping their eclairs on the ground and then the bread fell out of the bag. The three second rule doesn't count in France...too much doggy doo. Bummer!
